Experimental Glamour –
A Retrospective Photography Exhibition opening by Kevin Stewart

Knipnäs Kulttuuri ry proudly presents Experimental Glamour, a photography exhibition by artist and painter Kevin Stewart, on display in Tammisaari from May 24 to July 31, 2025.

Kevin Stewart is a retired American artist who has lived in Finland for nine years – the past several in Tammisaari. He has worked actively in photography and painting for over 37 years. Experimental Glamour is his fourth exhibition in Finland and serves as a kind of retrospective – a journey through the different phases of his artistic career.

In recent years, Stewart has developed a multidisciplinary and investigative working method, which he calls the collage flower technique. He began reworking images from his archive into experimental glamour portraits that merge playfulness, symbolism, and lived experience. His work draws strength from his African American background – a legacy of resilience and perspective that shines through his creative approach.
“I honor objects that have been abandoned. Everything has meaning,” he says.

The exhibition title refers to the playful and experimental approach that characterizes Stewart’s work. His photographs explore contrasts between light and shadow, intimacy and spectacle, everyday documentation and artistic boldness. The works are rich with presence and sensitivity to observation.

The opening event will take place on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, from 5 to 8 PM,
with the artist present to talk about his work and creative path. Light refreshments will be served.

You are warmly welcome to experience Experimental Glamour – a celebration of photography and life!

KATJA HÄRKKI

Visual artist

Katja Härkki (born 1969, Helsinki) is a visual artist and painter living and working in Lahti. She graduated as a designer and Master of Arts in 1997 from the University of Art and Design Helsinki and as a visual artist from the Lahti Art Institute in 2014.

In her art, Härkki explores her own identity and what it means to be a woman in the present day. Other central themes in her work include the body, humanity, nature, and how we see ourselves in universal time. For her, creating art is a playful process where she can be bold, experiment, reflect, and communicate.

Härkki’s paintings are condensed situations, almost like intimate set pieces. They contain dreamlike, random moments, akin to memories in time. In her works, time and place intertwine, simultaneously hiding and revealing.

“Only a journey into my own mind and transforming its reflected images into more concrete, visual representations can help me understand my world and myself through the painting process.”

Härkki’s paintings can be found in the collections of the Tampere Art Museum, the City of Tampere, Jorvi Childrens Hospital in Espoo, and in private collections.

Her wall paintings are located at the Knipnäs Wellbeing Center in Tammisaari. If you wish to view these works, please get in touch.

Härkki is a member of the Finnish Painters Union, the Lahti Artists’ Association (where she also serves on the board and exhibition working group), the Tampere Artists Association, and the Päijät-Häme Museum Association board.
